The Cape Bream is a previously undervalued species that occurs in natural abundance and is harvested year round. With its cooking versatility, it is well known within local Western Cape communities and has recently gained mainstream prominence through ABALOBI’s Fish With A Story programme.

Harvested by the Arniston, Struisbaai and Buffeljagsbaai small-scale fishing communities, Carpenter (or Silver) is a delicate, flavour-rich fish. Previously undervalued, this fish is now a sought-after staple in the kitchens of top chefs of the Cape.

Straight from the freezer to the pan, our deli fish packs are freshly frozen and vacuum-sealed to retain the same premium quality as the day they were caught.

Sea-lettuce is a nutrient-rich, edible green alga that is harvested intertidally by coastal fishing communities. Traditional fisherwomen of the Weskusmandjie Collective carefully collect, clean and sun-dry the sea-lettuce before adding it to coarse West Coast salt to create this unique product.

Cook like a Chef at Home – Recipe Inspiration from Fish With A Story

CARPENTERQuick ‘n Easy top tip: For an easy mid-week supper, lay Carpenter Fillets over torn swiss chard and chopped sugar snaps on an oven tray. Drizzle with olive oil and a squeeze of lemon juice. Season and bake in a 180 degree oven for 8-10 minutes until the fish flakes. Serve with baby potatoes or rice.

CAPE BREAM – Quick ‘n Easy top tip: Simply pan fry with chopped chorizo on a medium heat with a little butter and olive oil until the fish flakes. Add a good squeeze of fresh lemon and parsley. Enjoy with steamed veg, tomato salad and rice.
